I just want to ask a question. Read the following statement if you will:
Native bird populations could be completely wiped out in some areas hit by this year's mega mast.
It's set to be the biggest seeding event in more than 40 years, but half-a-million hectares of forest will receive no 1080 predator control.

"There's a huge number of rats, and there will be a huge number of stoats in our forests this year," says Peter Morton, of the Department of Conservation (DoC).

The threat to birdlife this summer is so much higher because climate change is making our native bush go through an explosion of seeding. That causes a chain reaction - the more seeds the more birds, the more birds the more rodents.

"We'll lose some of our most precious treasures in those forests," says Forest and Bird ecologist Rebecca Stirnemann.
Ok. So, if you reintroduce birdlife after a mega 1080 drop which killed say, well, everything, will the rodents come back in greater numbers because of the abundant birdlife, or will some invisible barrier stop this from happening. Ever. ? Just asking because it's not obvious.

There was a hack on the website running yesterday by someone or something that implanted a Cheetah icon overlay onto the screen. I was so sure it was something to do with the rugby but my doubtful mind wondered if it was to do with this topic

What I have noticed before and after a 1080 drop...

Before the drop there are a fair number of pesky critters. There is abundant birdlife and winged critters.

Immediately following a drop (we are near the Hunua ranges) the birdlife disappears, the birdsong is noticeably absent. Winged critters are also diminished greatly. The pesky critters are also diminished, however in 4 to 6 weeks they are the only ones coming back with avengeance!

It takes 10 to 12 weeks for the birdsong to come back.

Honestly if you employed hunters they would be far more choosy about their targets, the water wouldn't be poisoned, and new industries would be born.

The Earth won't stand for indiscriminate acts of terrorism for much longer, and we're in for a rude awakening I feel.

How long has 1080 been used in significant areas of New Zealand?

This is part one of a short video, jointly produced by the TBfree New Zealand and Hawke's Bay Regional Council as a response to the Graf brothers' documentary 'Poisoning Paradise'. It looks at the purported facts around the use of biodegradable 1080 poison in New Zealand to control conservation

Rangitata river has overflowed with massive destruction along SH72. Spectacular aerial footage was taken. Thunder, lightening, significant weather warnings through significant areas of New Zealand.

Overnight, today, SH2, Wellington is closed and the Hutt River has overflown to both sides. Limited, backed up access to Wellington from Upper Hutt / Wairarapa.

Drone footage over route 72 at Arundel has shown the full extent of damage caused by a flooding Rangitata River, cutting the South Island in half.

Rangitata, about 45 kilometres north of Timaru, was put into a state of emergency on Saturday as the Rangitata River burst its banks following significant rainfall that led to widespread flooding and slips, considered a one in 20 year event.

The Rangitata Bridge at State Highway 1, and the bridge at Arundel on route 72, will remain closed for at least the next 36 hours, Timaru Civil Defence spokesman Stephen Doran advised.

There are no other routes in and out of the area, and with mobile and internet connections in South Canterbury, out for at least 12 hours from Saturday afternoon, the island was cut off.

At least five people are dead after Whakaari/White Island erupted today, and "a number" of people are still unaccounted for.

One fatality has been confirmed and there will likely be more, National Operation Commander Deputy Commissioner John Tims told a press conference at 6.35pm today.

Video feed including from tourists:

A number of the tourists are from the Ovation of the Seas cruise ship, but police cannot confirm nationalities.

Police do not know if there are people on the island alive tonight. The five people dead are people who were taken off the island today. The other 18 rescued all have injuries to some degree.

Red Cross press release

At the request of New Zealand Police following the Whakaari / White Island eruption, New Zealand Red Cross has activated the Family Links website. The volcano erupted shortly after 2pm on Monday 9 December and a number of people remain unaccounted for.

People seeking to enquire about a loved one who they are unable to make contact with as a result of the eruption can do so by visiting www.redcross.org.nz.

The Family Links website allows for people in New Zealand or overseas to self-register themselves as safe and well, and/or register the details for the person they have lost contact with. This website does not host a list of missing persons. Information is submitted by members of the public.

Angela Sutherland, General Manager Disaster Risk Management, says: “We urge anyone worried about a friends and family following this eruption to first contact them as you normally would. Using your own channels can help to speed up the process and helps response agencies as well.

“If you cannot make contact, please register them through our Family Links website.”

People who have made contact with someone previously registered as missing on the Family Links website should update their information on the website.

New Zealand Red Cross will continue to work closely with New Zealand Police to respond to enquiries lodged through this website.

St John media release

11 helicopters, 12 ambulances

"St John can confirm ambulance operations responded to a volcanic eruption on White Island this afternoon, occurring at 2.11pm. Our ambulance crews have worked with New Zealand Police, Royal New Zealand Coastguard, Ambulance Air Operators, District Health Boards and Royal New Zealand Airforce, in a coordinated response to the White Island eruption.

"One helicopter with paramedics and St John Medical Director Dr Tony Smith on board spent a short time on the island assessing the scene. Staging points were set up at Whakatane Airport and Whakatane Coastguard base to assess and triage patients. In total St John responded with 11 helicopters and 12 ambulances to treat and transport patients to various hospitals including Whakatane, Tauranga, Middlemore and Auckland City, by air and road.

"St John has treated patients with injuries ranging from critical and serious through to moderate and minor. It has been an exceptionally complex scene and our paramedics, both frontline and working in our Clinical Communications Centre, have done an outstanding job in very difficult circumstances.

"We will continue to support the operation and debrief with our frontline teams in the coming days."

WHITE ISLAND ERUPTION: THE DAY AFTER

• Five people confirmed dead and eight are missing, presumed killed
• 34 people rescued from the island, many with severe burns - 31 remain in hospital
• Police say there are no further signs of life
• Many of the victims are foreign tourists, including from Australia, US, UK, Malaysia and China
• NZ Defence Force to approach island at first light today
• Drones due to be deployed to assess environment

Rescuers face the grim task of recovering more bodies today, with no signs of life reported on Whakaari/White Island a day after the volcanic eruption.

Five people have been confirmed dead after a sudden volcanic eruption struck at 2.11pm yesterday. Eight other people are missing, presumed killed, and 31 people are in hospital with a range of injuries.

Safety regulations slammed

A former Whakatane mayor and long-time diving operator around White Island has slammed safety regulations.

Tony Bonne believed people should have been able to head out to the volcano immediately after the eruption to try and rescue people or bring bodies back to the mainland.

“I know as humans, before all the health and safety regulations we would have been in there straight away and putting our own lives at risk,” he told the Herald this morning.

“I know if I was still operating my dive operation, I would have been out there to help. It’s just one of those things.

“It’s what we do, it’s part of our DNA. It’s frustrating where sometimes regulations stop that but I think we’ve got the right people.”

Bonne’s diving company-operated tours around White Island for 15-years and he had been on the island many times.

He was feeling “numb” about the deaths of people who had been pulled off the island.

The volcanic eruption would be devastating for the small coastal community, with much of its economy focused around White Island, Bonne said.

Elsewhere, he asked people not to judge and lay blame too early - getting people off the island was at the forefront of his mind.

“Emergencies from my experience of being mayor, people like to blame and we’ve seen that already,” Bonne said.“I say stand back, don’t blame and let's get this thing sorted.”

Questions are being asked over why tourists were allowed at White Island when its "alert level" had been elevated over recent weeks.

Under the GeoNet-managed NZ Volcanic Alert Level system, ranging from zero to five, the volcano had recently been rated level 2, indicating "moderate to heightened volcanic unrest".

That had been raised in response to increasing amounts of sulphur dioxide gas, along with volcanic tremors – both which can signal rising magma deep in the volcano.
